Program Descriptions:

Full-Time MBA:
Each August, a diverse group of approximately 200 talented students from around the world enrolls in Owen's full-time MBA program. Over 30 countries are represented in the program and many students have spent time living, working, studying and traveling in countries other than their own. Students come from a wide variety of academic, professional and personal backgrounds, and work for an average of five years before enrolling.

The Vanderbilt MBA academic calendar is based on the "mod"-a unit in our modular system of short, intensive courses, each seven weeks in length. Two mods equal one semester. Mods give MBA candidates a fast start by allowing them to take courses in their chosen specialty as early as the spring of their first year. A student can complete significant study in his or her Concentration or Specialization before a taking on a summer internship. The total number of courses over a two-year period allows students the freedom and flexibility to take electives within their chosen specialty or in cross-functional areas of interest.

All Owen students start with the required courses in "the core" - an intense and immediate immersion in the fundamentals of management. Recruiters prize the Owen core because it produces MBAs who have that "extra something": exceptional analytical skills, a solid strategic foundation, outstanding teamwork, and drive and determination.

Owen encourages students to focus on their fields of choice to demonstrate their commitment to an industry and career path. Students can also earn credits toward their MBA degree outside of Owen by taking classes in another graduate or professional school at the university or by spending a semester abroad at one of many international exchange partners.

Joint Degrees:
The Owen Graduate School of Management offers joint degree programs with other prestigious professional and graduate schools at Vanderbilt. Currently, we offer such degrees in concert with the Medical School, the Graduate School, the Nursing School, the Law School, the School of Engineering, and the Divinity School. There is a significant benefit of time savings in pursuing an MBA as a joint degree. The traditional MBA program requires 61 hours (4 full semesters) of course work. However, when pursued as part of a joint degree, the requirement is reduced to 49 credit hours (3 semesters), since Owen will accept 12 hours from the partner school as electives.

Owen also offers a five-year undergraduate/MBA degree with the college of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and with Fisk University. The five-year program allows a student to earn both an MBA and an undergraduate degree within a five-year period rather than the six years that it would normally require to enroll in both programs consecutively.

The Executive MBA Program is designed to meet the special needs of mid-career managers and executives. Meeting on alternate weekends (Friday and Saturday) over 21 months, the EMBA Program provides both the knowledge and the credentials for managers to succeed in today's dynamic business environment. In the Executive MBA Program, managers gain the broad business perspective of senior management without sacrificing the rigor and depth of a top quality MBA degree.

Owen offers a variety of non-degree programs and seminars, including open-enrollment and custom executive education programs. For more information and a complete list of offerings, please call (615) 322-2513, send an email to execed@owen.vanderbilt.edu or visit our web site.

Nowhere is the emphasis on career more evident than at Owen. Our curriculum is focused on helping our students gain the knowledge and skills needed to boost their careers in their chosen fields. In addition to coursework and an intellectually stimulating classroom environment, Owen provides myriad opportunities to help you build your resume during your two-year program. We offer for-credit consulting projects with local, national, and global firms; academic challenges such as national case competitions; internships; exposure to distinguished business executives who frequently visit Owen; and a variety of leadership positions with over 25 academic, civic, and social student clubs.

Individually and in small groups, students put theory and application into practice by working with well-established organizations and start-up companies. By developing independent study courses with professors or engaging in projects initiated by the Owen Entrepreneurship Center, recent students have crafted strategic business plans, created complex financial models, evaluated new product and service ideas, analyzed potential markets, worked with venture capital firms, and started new businesses, not only for practical experience, but also for academic credit. This hands-on approach distinguishes Vanderbilt MBA students and graduates and prepares them to make an immediate contribution in their internships and full-time jobs.
