Accreditation(s): The Carlson School of Management is accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB is the premier accrediting agency for undergraduate and graduate business administration and accounting programs. Description of Learning Environment for Students: Founded in 1919, the Carlson School is located near downtown Minneapolis and is 10 minutes from St. Paul. Students are close to the action yet enjoy a campus setting in tree-filled neighborhoods. The University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive universities in the country. There are 500 student organizations. Cultural and recreational facilities include the Recreation Center, the world-renowned Weisman Art Museum, and student theaters. Fortune ranked the Twin Cities in the top ten areas for U.S. businesses. From health care to high technology, students have access to almost all fields. With the world's largest shopping mall, Broadway road productions, lakes, professional sports, a variety of restaurants, excellent schools, and affordable housing, the Twin Cities area is a desirable place to live. Facilities The $45-million Carlson School building offers students an advanced management facility. The MBA program integrates technology into every aspect of the curriculum and is recognized by Computerworld as one of the best "techno" M.B.A.'s available. Classrooms have built-in or wireless Internet connections and are wired for advanced multimedia presentations and information technologies. There are five computer laboratories, the Financial Markets Laboratory, the Carlson Consulting Laboratory, and videoconferencing capabilities. The Business School Network The Carlson School is aggressive in connecting with the business community-locally, nationally, and internationally. The School's Board of Overseers, made up of Fortune 500 and small- and medium-sized companies, reflects the diverse business community in Minneapolis and St. Paul. What distinguishes this community from other strong business communities is its cooperation and involvement with the School. Executives participate in the mentorship program, the Top Management Perspectives course, the classroom, the experiential learning options, and curricular and program considerations. The late Curt Carlson, entrepreneur and founder of Carlson Companies, donated $36 million to the School. A worldwide alumni network and the Alumni Advisory Board assist the School in many ways, and alumni donations enhance current programs, such as the Business Career Center's automated recruiting system, the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, and international programs. Placement The Business Career Center offers services and programs that help students in both determining a career path and finding the right employment opportunities, including resume critiques, mock interviews, career counseling, job-search workshops, national job fairs, and internship coordination. Twenty-four-hour access to job postings, interview schedules, and an alumni network are provided through an online database. More than 200 companies recruit Carlson students, and the School actively coordinates student visits to companies on the East and West Coasts. Faculty: Faculty members who teach core courses meet regularly to talk about classroom progress. Their mission is to not only introduce MBA students to the functional areas of business but also to the relationships among those areas. Faculty connections to the business community provide insider knowledge of what businesses need and, therefore, what students should learn to prepare for the future. MBA faculty members are very involved with the students, from answering e-mails at odd hours to joining students at planned social events. While the Carlson faculty maintains a high level of relevant business research to support the innovative nature of the program, an emphasis on quality teaching is an added focus.
